Hundreds of County employees spent their 4th of July serving the nation as reservists in the military, with dozens of them serving on active duty far from home. 4. A rare disease called Chagas is moving undetected locally, but education, outreach, and testing is changing perceptions and raising awareness. 5. If you’re unemployed and between the ages of 16-24, the County may be able to help you find a summer job. 6. Arts education in schools across the County is flourishing, thanks to a nationally recognized Arts Commission program.

A typical pharmacy fills around 250 prescriptions every day, but one Department of Health Services pharmacy alone handles 1,200 prescriptions a day. Now, DHS is meeting demand by brining the latest technology and incredible accuracy to County pharmacies. 2. There’s a new #2 at the Sheriff’s Department. Meet Undersheriff Paul Tanaka. 3. The ban on plastic bags in the unincorporated areas is now in place and County leaders are making sure residents have access to replacement bags and info about the ban. 4. The $56 million Civic Park project is moving along, brining much-needed green space to Downtown Los Angeles. 5. Junior golfers will be hitting the links for less green this month at the County’s numerous public courses. 6. The County Library’s summer reading program is giving kids a chance to read a book and participate in a community service project at the same time. 7. School’s out and pools are open with 14 County pools providing recreational swimming for kids until September.

Individuals and businesses who are leaders in the greening of their communities are honored by the County in the Green Leadership Awards. 4. Construction has now started and the project is gaining national attention for the unique way it’s being funded. 2. Over 80 lives have been saved since Supervisor Don Knabe led the launch of the Safe Surrender Program nearly 10 years ago, and recently one of the program’s success stories came by for a visit. 3. Rates of heart disease and stroke have dropped dramatically in Los Angeles County in recent years. The Department of Public Health shares what’s behind the decline. 4. According to National Geographic, one of the best gardens in the world is the County’s own Descanso Gardens. 5. The LA Opera is bringing music and song to public in Opera Tales, a series of performances happening now at branches of the County Public Library. 6. Los Angeles County was hit with minimal damage after the recent tsunami, but the unincorporated community of Two Harbors on Catalina Island had a direct hit, including impacting a Sheriff’s Department vessel. 3. The members of the Fire Department’s California Task Force-2 are back from Japan and are reuniting with family and friends. 4. New census data is out: how much the County grew in the past decade, and how the Boundary Review Committee and public can put the new numbers to use in helping determine the boundaries of the five supervisorial districts. 5. A partnership between the American Cancer Society and Harbor/UCLA Medical Center is helping guide the way to support and services for hundreds of local cancer patients. 6. Animal Care and Control will be cracking down after the Board of Supervisors tightens rules on puppy mills and irresponsible pet breeders. 7. Construction at LACMA unearthed an underground treasure trove of fossils. Now, scientists from the County’s Page Museum are leading the excavations of the discoveries found during Project 23.
